Handblown Glassware

Layered Mold Design

These hand blown glasses were created using an unconventional mold-making technique. Instead of traditional CNC machined wooden molds, I experimented with a laser-cut mold made from 29 layers of 3.6mm plywood.

Not having easy access to a CNC machine, I researched alternative methods of glass mold making and found some laser cut examples online. After discovering this layered mold technique, I was eager to try it out for myself, especially since I had free use of the necessary tools.

Interested by the potential of this technique, I wanted to create something that celebrated the texture of the layered mold construction, rather than trying to hide it. This resulted in a distinctive visual texture on the final glasses.

One advantage of this approach is that it allows for the integration of closure handles and hinges into the mold itself. The process of laser cutting also leaves a charred inside edge meaning the mold doesn't need to be post burned as is typically required.

BLÆS Glass Studio

BLÆS is a glassblowing workshop and store located in Refshaleøen, Copenhagen. It is run by two glass artists who have designed their workshop to be open and welcoming, encouraging social interaction in order to bring more exposure to glassblowing.

As someone looking to test out my laser cut mold for the first time, BLÆS' open mindedness and expertise in glassblowing made them the ideal workshop to experiment with and learn from.
